James Zurek is the host of Gospel Boogie.
Gospel Boogie, airing every Sunday morning at 9am US CST, is an exploration of the classic gospel music sounds of the 1940’s through the early 1970’s. The show features the uptempo sounds from that golden age, no matter the classification. There are no barriers on Gospel Boogie. All forms of gospel music have a home here and are presented with equal enthusiasm. A vast majority of the music you hear comes directly from the substantial collection of 78’s, 45’s, LP’s and radio transcriptions that James has acquired over the years.
An avid fan of classic Country, Bluegrass, 1920’s and 30’s Jazz and Dance Bands, first generation Punk, early post-war Jazz and 1950’s and 60’s Rock and Roll and R&B….as well as most anything else from 1900 to 1980…he especially gravitated toward the sounds of gospel music from the 1940’s/50’s/60’s. Finding it perfectly natural to listen to the quartet stylings of the Five Blind Boys of Alabama and the Statesmen Quartet, as well as to the bluegrass sounds of J.D. Jarvis and the Pentecostal shout of Brother Claude Ely, all in successive order, he desired a show to present the music in the same manner. Gospel Boogie is the result.
James currently resides in Southern California. Besides music, his other hobbies include working on his classic cars, maintaining his mid-century modern home, enjoying a good movie (whether a Spaghetti Western, 1930’s horror or Film Noir), playing bass with The Palominos and trying to keep up with his reading of historically themed books….amongst other things……
